We Want to Hear from You: Reviewing Our Sector’s Policy Priorities

With a provincial election on the horizon, Nonprofits Vote is reviewing our sector-wide policy priorities to ensure they remain relevant and responsive to today’s realities.

In 2022, nonprofit leaders came together through Nonprofits Vote to identify five policy priorities with broad, sector-wide impact. Shaped by research, consultation, and sector dialogue, these priorities formed the basis of unified asks presented during the 2023 provincial election.

Since then, we have made meaningful progress together. Nonprofits have been active in the policy decisions that affect them. Relationships with government have strengthened. Improved provincial data infrastructure now provides clearer insight into the size and contribution of our sector. A workforce feasibility study laid the groundwork for coordinated action — including progress toward a nonprofit workforce council and a more strategic approach to volunteer recruitment.

As we prepare to re-engage candidates, elected officials, and policymakers ahead of the 2027 election, we are reviewing these priorities to ensure they remain reflective of the sector’s realities and grounded in the current operating environment.

The Five Policy Priorities

1. Appropriate Funding
Ensure funding reflects the real costs and demands of nonprofit work — including investment where it is most needed and equitable support across the sector.

2. A Workforce Strategy
Address recruitment, retention, and career pathways in the nonprofit workforce — including coordinated approaches to volunteer engagement and workforce planning.

3. Better Data Collection
Support comprehensive, accessible sector data so nonprofits and governments can make informed decisions that strengthen impact and sustainability.

4. A Door to Government
Create a dedicated space for ongoing dialogue between nonprofits and government, enabling collaboration on shared challenges and opportunities.

5. An Empowered Sector
Reduce red tape, streamline processes, and strengthen nonprofit voice in decision-making that affects funding and service delivery.

What’s Coming Over the Next Two Months

To support this review, we will release a series of short surveys — one each week, seven in total.

  • The first survey asks about the priorities as a whole.

  • In the weeks that follow, we’ll take a deeper dive into each priority area.

  • At the end of the series, we’ll check in once more on the priorities overall.

Your input will help us:

  • Confirm what remains urgent

  • Identify where progress is most achievable

  • Refine and strengthen the platform

  • Ensure our policy recommendations are clear and well-supported

  • Flag additional progress or developments we may not have captured

Each survey takes approximately five minutes to complete. Responses will be reported in aggregate.

Thank you for contributing your perspective and helping ensure our collective policy work remains relevant!
