Nonprofits Vote exists to inspire, organize, and mobilize the nonprofit sector to create collective impact.
Our Mission
Nonprofits Vote is a policy advocacy hub for a thriving sector; a vehicle for effective policy advocacy collaboration; and a tool to help make policy work engaging and accessible. It supports building nonprofit capacity to enable: nonprofits to fulfill their missions, recognition and use of nonprofit expertise, and better understanding and effective and efficient serving of community needs.
Our Vision
Alberta’s nonprofit sector has a strong collective influence with governments, funders, and decision-makers in the policies and decisions that help nonprofits support strong, connected, engaged communities.
Why Nonprofits Matter
The nonprofit sector employs over 285,000 people in Alberta, 78% of whom are women and many of whom are new Canadians. Dollar for dollar, nonprofit investments generate more jobs than many other industries.
For example, a $350 million investment in nonprofits is estimated to create approximately 4,800 jobs—more than double what the same investment would create in construction. Volunteers contribute an incredible 227 million hours of service each year. Activities performed in the nonprofit sector span poverty reduction, health, mental health, arts and culture, environment, cultural and language support, immigrant settlement, childcare, sport and recreation – and more.
These services are essential to attract and retain workers across all sectors. Private sector workforce strategies in Alberta consistently cite the need for social services (like immigrant settlement, English as a second language and childcare) to support the workers they need. Quality-of-life indicators that are advanced in large part by nonprofits are also increasingly critical to attracting a qualified workforce in a rapidly changing and competitive global economy. The full spectrum of services and activities provided by our essential sector make Alberta a great place to live, work and play, helping our communities - and economy - thrive.

An Evening with Party Leaders
Nonprofits Vote partners invited UCP and NDP party leaders Danielle Smith and Rachel Notley to present their vision for Alberta’s #nonprofit sector. In April 2023 we hosted Rachel Notley to a packed house, and in May 2023, hosted Premier Danielle Smith to a similarly packed online event. The NDP followed up in April witha commitment to all five Platform Priorities, while Danielle Smith, just a few days away from the election at the time of our conversation, communicated her desire to increase funding for Family and Community Support Services, and make it easier for nonprofits to access government.

Lethbridge Nonprofits Vote Campaign & Candidates’ Forum
An impressive #nonprofitsvote campaign was also mounted in Lethbridge by The Nonprofit Vote director Volunteer Lethbridge, including conversations hosted with UCP and NDP candidates in both of their ridings.

ArtsVote
During the 2023 provincial election, The Rozsa Foundation and Nonprofits Vote teamed up to host the ArtsVote campaign, which saw 758 letter submissions to provincial representatives through our platform. The result of this advocacy saw Premier Danielle Smith add ‘Arts’ to a Ministry title, elevating its importance and prioritization for the newly formed government. The Premier referenced the advocacy from the arts community as having a direct influence on this decision.
